Health” award from the
Association of North Carolina Boards of Health
in January 2008
The board of health’s primary responsibility is
to “…protect and promote the public health” (North Carolina General
Statute 130A-39).
The
board of health also acts as the “…policy-making, rule-making and
adjudicatory body for a county health department [Transylvania County
Department of Public Health]” (North Carolina General Statute 130A-35).
The
members of the board of health are appointed by the Transylvania County
Board of Commissioners. The board is composed of eleven members
and its composition includes a physician, dentist, optometrist,
veterinarian, registered nurse, pharmacist, county commissioner,
professional engineer and three representatives of the general public
(North Carolina General Statute 130A-35).

The
board of health generally meets the second Tuesday of every month at
7:00pm. Meetings are held in the first floor conference room of
the Human Services Building (Department of Social Services Building).
The board reserves the right to cancel meetings or to hold special
meetings when necessary.
